        Meeting between many of the world's government leaders, most notably the “big three”:FDR, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill, which took place in Livonia Palace near the city of Yalta in Crimea. The conference was about how the countries of which the big three represented would set about rebuilding the demolished sections of Europe. This agreements and promises set here would set the stage for the events that will later start the Cold War.

    The Truman Doctrine
        Created by US president Harry Truman, this foreign policy formally stated to the world how the United States planned on dealing with the spread of communism. It said that the US would provide financial aid to all European countries resisting communism. It’s the policy that was behind the Berlin Airlift. This went against many UN rulings and was not taken lightly by the Soviet Union.

    It was now that Stalin had fully broken the agreements and promises he had made during the Yalta Conference. Stalin was not letting the people have free elections, nor was he removing his military from the Eastern European countries. He forced communism upon these countries, but nothing could be done about this because the Soviet Union possessed a very powerful army at the time. This was not taken lightly by the rest of Europe and America.

    During the Soviet occupation of Eastern Berlin, Germany, Stalin attempted to capture Western Berlin by blockading the roads out of soviet occupied lands. The United States responded by sending in plane after plane of supplies to keep the people of West Berlin from falling to communism. This showed to the world that the United States hadn't given up on Berlin, and that the United States meant business.

    In the early days of the cold war, the Soviet Union was working hard, trying to develop their own atomic bomb. At first they ran into a shortage of Uranium, a key ingredient in nuclear weaponry, but acquired a new source in Eastern Europe. The United States believed that the Soviets wouldn't have nuclear capabilities until the mid 1950’s, but to the world’s surprise the first successful soviet test of nuclear weapons occurred in 1949.

    After the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII, civil war broke out in China between the Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-shek, and the communists, or Peoples Republic of China, led by Mao Zedong. The US gave lots of support in the form of weapons and money to the nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-shek, but due to some questionable decisions he made regarding US aid, he lost the support of his people and fell in October of 1949

    The Korean war was fought to keep the communists in North Korea from taking over South Korea, which at the time was divided in the middle by the 38th parallel. The US gave all sorts of aid the the South Koreans, such as money, weapons, and troops. The US maintained its presence in Korea until August 18th, 1954

    After the invention of the U2 spy plane, reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union became a regular activity with the US. On May 1st, 1960, Pilot Gary Powers took off over the Soviet Union, the Soviets knew he was coming, and shot him down. After this the relations between the US and USSR only got worse, leading towards a nuclear crisis.
