    Three mile island is a power plant in Harrisburg, PN that blew up. The radiation from the explosion was said to cause cancer and sterilization. Chernobyl is another nuclear disaster. It happened on April 26, 1986 and wiped out the entire city. The nuclear disasters created glasnost which was the opening of the soviet union.

The air force had planned on using this space shuttle for satelite launches before the disaster. Many people viewed the launch live because of a teacher that was on the shuttle and was going to be the first female teacher in space. The shuttle explosion is now used for many discussions on engineering safety.
