    In 1791, coal was first discovered by Europeans in Australia in Hunter River in NSW. It was discovered by escaping convict, William Bryant.

    The second discovery of coal was on the coast of NSW. The discovery was by William Clarke. This was an important discovery beacause it assisted with the industrialisation for the colony.

    The first Coalmine was established in Australia near Hunter River.
  • Permanent settlement set up

    In 1804, Governer King set up a permanent settlement at Hunter River. He named it Newcastle and it bcame the center of development of Australias's coal trade.

    From 1804 to 1808, caol in newcaslte was first used to make salt. Seawater was boiled by buning coal.
