Clara Barton was born -
Opened school
Clara Barton went to New Jersey where she saw many boys on every corner of the street that had nothing to do. She went to the chairman of the school committee where she was given a one room school house where only 6 people showed up the first day. One year later more than 600 kids showed up. Clara taught for many years but decided to move on when another man was appointed principle of the school she created. This event is important because Clara provided education to many kids. -
Tended to soldiers
Clara Barton had returned to Washington D.C. where the Civil had just broke out. Many wounded soldiers were brought to the capital building. Clara Barton went over to the hospital where she immediately started gathering food, medicine and supplies to give to the soldiers. Clara then asked her friends in other states to send items for the soldiers. Clara received many supplies and is very important to American history for helping the wounded soldiers and was known as the Angel of the Battlefield -
Nearly Killed
At the battle of Antietam Clara Barton was almost killed. She was helping a wounded soldier on the battle field where a bullet went right through the sleeve of her dress and killed the man she was helping. Clara Barton got the bullet out of the mans cheek with little experience. Clara Barton brought many soldiers supplies they needed even though she knew she could get hurt. This is one of the reasons Clara Barton was known as a hero. -
Field Hospitals
Clara Barton helped establish field hospitals. She then helped distribute supplies after the failed assaults. Clara Barton has continuously helped wounded soldiers in various ways and this is why she is remembered in American History. -
Missing Men
Clara Barton helped establish the Office of Correspondence with Friends of the Missing Men by authority of President Lincoln. Clara Barton had to respond to anxious relatives of missing soldiers, locating them by casualty lists. This led her to a 4 year search for missing men. This is again another reason why Clara Barton is such a hero. -
International Red Cross
Clara Barton read about the International Red Cross while she was in Switzerland. Barton started by delivering sanitary supplies to many places. While in Europe Barton heard about the Geneva Convention and how the United States had not signed it. Clara Barton got honored for her work and decided to come back to the states in 1873. -
American Red Cross
Clara Barton worked to establish the American Red Cross. Clara was also elected president of the Red Cross. She directed the Red Cross to provided aid for floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Clara also provided help to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Clara Barton is known as one of the best nurses, and a big reason for this is because of the American Red Cross. -
Typhoid Fever Epidemic
Clara Barton went to Pennsylvania to distribute supplies. Clara then turned the project over to local authorities. Clara Barton continues to help out the wounded over sick and is another reason why she is such a hero. -
National First Aid Association of America
Clara Barton established the National First Aid Association of America. Barton served as a president there for five years. The organization helped with basic first aid instructions and developed the first aid kits. Clara Barton helped people by being in an organization that taught people basic skills to help there selves. -
Story of Childhood
Clara Barton published "The Story of My Childhood". Barton chose to share her life story with everyone. Clara Barton is a hero and role model by how many lives she saved and by telling her story and that is why she is remembered in history. -
Death
Clara Barton died at the age of 91.
