    Senators Henry Clay and Stephen Douglass initiated the Compromise of 1850, The Compromise prevented newly expanded U.S terrioties from legalizing slavery. The Compromise also strengthened the Fugitave Slave Act. These actions led to an increased size of the Union, and there power.

    The Nebraska act of 1854 allowed settelers in new territiories chose to be pro or anti slavery. It cuased settlers to argue over kansass, and helped lead to the civil war.

  • Dred Scott V. Sanford

    Dred Scott V. Sanford
    In the case "Dred Scott v. Sanford" Virginia slave Dred Scott attempted to sue for his own freedom. When the case made its way up to the Supreme Court justices ruled that Dred Scott was property and held no legal rights, and was not recognized as a human being. This showed that southern slave owners had complete control of there slaves, and fueled the norths passion to create an equal country.

  • John Browns Uprising

    John Browns Uprising
    In October of 1859 Abolitionist John Brown gathered a group of free blacks, and white allies raided an arsenal in Harpers Ferry Virginia. They had hopes to distribute weapons to southern slaves and spark an uprising in the south. While keeping hold of the arsenal John Browns forces were surronded by Robert E. Lee and defeated. When Brown was exucuted for treason he became a driving cuase of the Civil War and was a symbol for the Abolitionist movement.

    Folowing the election of lincoln, 7 southern states left the union. This was a major turning point and the last straw before the civil war.

    In 1860 the nation saw the election of a new President. Lincoln was elected and had strong ideas and changes in mind. Not only did this give the union a leader but it gave them motivation and suppourt.
