    On September 22, 1862 The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln.

    Even though the Union troops largely outnumbered the Confederates, the Union suffered more than twice as many casualties.

    Both Union President Lincoln and Confederate President Davis believed Vicksburg was the key to winning the war.
