Second Great Awakening
The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival. This would bring many different types of worship to the states such as large gallarings with multiple preachers and priest, almost like a religious festival. This would also lead to the first black church being made by George Leile. Many people attended festivals and started attending the AME church. This would help black people learn about religion and how to read and write. -
The Creation of the Cotten Gin
An invention by Eli Whitney. It made the production of cotton more efficient then it had ever been. The cotton gin made slavery a massively profitable business for mill owner and plantation owners. This also cause an increase in the need for slaves in America. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana purchase was between France and America. America purchased the land between New Orleans to Canada, they bought the land for around 15 million dollars, the land stretched 828,000 square miles, this means the purchases the land for around 3 cents per acre. This expanded U.S territory. Allowing more expansion westward would also mean more states which would still be divided half and half between free, and slave states. -
The American Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution was a period of time where machines were starting to be more commonly used. This made working conditions for workers using the machines incredibly tough with the amount of employees rising. The industrial revolution cause to creation more mass produced products. Which intern then made more things able to be obtained instead of having to make them yourself like clothing and others everyday products. -
The Missouri Compromise
The Missouri compromise was created due to Missouri becoming a state, however in order for this to happen they needed to either make another state or divide land somewhere to create one. This led to Maine becoming split from Massachusetts and becoming its own free state, while Missouri became a slave state. This showed how the government wasn’t going to let the balance of free and slave states ever tip to one sides favor. -
Nat Turner’s Rebellion
Nat Turner planned to kill plantation owners, and their families. The killings lasted for a little over two days. This made many people believe that African-Americans were irrational. Instead of seeing it for its true meaning. That of someone who is so fed up with the situation they are in that he decides to kill those who keep the system running. -
Nullification Crisis
South Carolina believed they didn’t have to pay taxes to import foreign goods. This caused many protests in the south on whether or not they have to pay them. Later forced to. The north views this action as reckless and stupid. The south praises the bravery of South Carolina and condemns Andrew Jackson and his supporters. -
Mexican American War
Conflict that started through argue it over whether Texas started at the Rio Grande or whether it started at the Nucleus River. This would lead to mathematical going to war for property. This war would help get a lot more land for the U.S. This helped the expansion of more plantations in the south. -
California Gold Rush
Many people flooded into California to mine for gold. This would become a craze and cause many people to lose their lives, however those who did find large pieces of gold became very wealthy. This would get California the amount of people needed to make a state. Only problem was that if it were to be a free, or slave state that would mean unbalance in the system. -
Compromise of 1850
The comprise that followed after making California a state, was if California is a free state, there needs to be a slave state. This led to the creation of Utah. The government was trying to balance the states. Trying to hold onto balance for as long as possible, even if that meant splitting larger states into two. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Stowe’s book Uncle Tom's Cabin is received well by many people and printed all over America. The book was about a slave named Tom, who saves a life of a young girl, her father then purchases Tom and treats him well for saving his daughter. Gave many white people the perspective of slavery in America. This would also cause many other things to come out trying to glorify the life of a slave as something that any person would like. -
Frederick Douglass gives July 4th Speech
Douglas’ speech touches on how the Declaration of Independence doesn’t mean anything to him or people like him. This is due to the lack of care for black people in America. With the line of,”all men are created equal” being extremely damning due to it being a lie due to Douglas and other black men not being treated the same. Caused many people to believe that many texts were untrue and unfair. If they weren’t applying to black men, then why was it applying to white men? -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The creation of the two territories required one tío be a free state, and one to be a slave state. It let the citizens vote on what they wanted the state to be. Causing many people from different areas to come in and sway the vote. This started Bleeding Kansas which was many violent attacks on those coming from other states to make it a free state. This was last for many years and cause many deaths. -

This was a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, where due to the pro-slavery leaning people feeling very firm on there beliefs they started to attack and kill many opposing views having people. This caused many senators of northern states feel unsafe, if they were gonna be very little actions on people killing opposing viewing people, then who was to say they wouldn't start storming other free states and try to do the same. -
Attack on Charles Sumner
Senator Charles Sumner was brutally attacked by another senator Preston Brooks. The altercation was due to Sumner being an abolitionist. While Brooks was a pro-slavery viewing senator.
This made tensions rises between opposing states. It also made many senators carry gun, pocket knives, or there own cane to protect themselves in case they were to get attack.
Dred Scot -
Dred Scott v Sanford
Dred Scott was forced to return to his enslaver after living a free life for years. This case is very important due to the final conclusion saying that Dred Scott was property, meaning that slaves weren’t seen as people but property. The final conclusion that a black person was property was very controversial, this would mean that many prior thoughts on the Declaration of Independence wouldn't apply to black people and men. -
Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown and his men had a standoff with many officers due to him going on a killing spree to make a statement on injustice that was slavery. This increased militarization in many places. Making more militias in order to stop something similar from happening again. -
The Election of 1860
None of the candidates had a majority of the votes the closest to majority was Lincolns 40%. Some of the ballots in the South didn’t even have Lincolns name on it due to how little they wanted him as the president. The election caused many riots in the south. The uproar from Lincoln winning was deemed unacceptable by the south, however in the North it was the complete opposite. The north saw this as the end of slavery, and the beginning of unity in the states. -
Southern Secession
The south was trying to divide itself from the rest of the states. This was due to the disliking towards Lincoln and the agenda he was pushing on anti-slavery, with slavery being one of the biggest sources of income. This would be the final breaking point that would start the civil war, if they were a divided country, then they couldn’t truly call themselves the United States. -
Shots fired at Ft. Sumter
This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops (northern troops) stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina were attacked by the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event.
