Civil War Events Timeline

  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri compromise created an imbalance between the number of slave states, until the admission of Maine as an anti-slave state. After becoming a pro-slave state, it allowed for an imaginary line to be drawn dividing the former Louisiana Territory into pro and anti-slavery divisions. This was ended after the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1864.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The compromise of 1850 ended the war problems. This made California a free state from slavery. Creating Utah and New Mexico territories to be led by popular sovereignty. It ended the slave trade and made it easier to recover fugitives.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    This allowed the capture and return of runaway slaves. This also allowed further provisions regarding runaway slaves, there were harder punishments added for the slaves. This is one of the most conversional law of the early 19th century.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed each territory to decide what to do with the idea of slavery based on popular sovereignty. They violated something that they had agreed on which made the conflict between the new anti-slavery settlers and the pro-slavery this became a problem known as the Bleeding Kansas and paved a way to the American Civil War.
  • Dred Scott Supreme Court decision

    This gave slave owners the right to take their slaves to western territories. The Americans hoped that the supreme court could settle the issue. The residents in the newly created territories could decide by vote to allow slaves.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    The raid was supposed to be established for freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. He was captured accused of treason and was later hung. This increased tensions between the Northern and Southern states before the American Civil War

    Abraham Lincoln

    President Lincoln was known for wanting to reserve the Union as a whole. Ending slavery was a way to reserve the Union. He also made the Emancipation Proclamation and published it. He helped end the Civil War and slavery.
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln and his party wanted to end slavery but most of the south didn't agree with him because most of their plantation relied on slaves. This caused a argument between the people which started the Civil war. Due to everyone hating him this caused him to be assassinated. After his death, everyone realized that he wasn't actually a bad guy.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Generals Lee and McClellan battled near Antietam creek. This was fought on on the Northern soil. This gave Lincoln enough stuff to publish his Emancipation Proclamation. This was one of the bloodies days, it had more then 22,000 casualties.

    Emancipation Proclamation

    Due to the conflict and fighting, they didn't think they could get rid of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was created to free all slaves. It didn't free the slaves but it was a big step towards freeing them.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    It is considered to be the most important engagement of the American Civil War. General Lee had less than 15,000 troops to attack at Cemetery Ridge. Lee was forced to withdraw from the battle back to Virginia.
