  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Senate and the House of representatives tried to maintain a balance of power between slaveholding states and free states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    It was five bills that were passed. 1, California became a free state. 2. Mexico, and Utah were allowed to use popluar sovereignty to decide the issue of slavery.3. Texas gave up lands to Mexico, and paid 10 million dollars to mexico for debt. 4. Slave trade was ablosihed in the district of Columbia. 5. The fugitive slave act was put into play.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    The local government had to capture the escaped slaves and return them back to their owners.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Pro slavery and free state settlers tried to influence residents . Some people wanted kansas to be a free state and others wanted it to be a slave state. Fights broke out among the two to fight for control.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Settlers didnt want to move their because they could not legally claim and hold the land in Nebraska.
  • Bleeding Sumner’ Brooks-Sumner fight

    Preston Brooks was angry and he was looing for senate Charles Sumner. When brooks found sumner , he beat up sumner, leaving him unconsious and bloody.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred scott was a black slave. He was taken from his free state and moved to a slave state. He tried to sue, but he want able to because he was african american.
  • Election of 1860

    The northern states suggested stephen douglas to represent the black republicans. The south seen Douglas as a traitor because he supported the popular sovereignty . The north chose Douglas, while the south chose John C breckenridge to represent them.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter, 1861

    General beauregard opened fire on the Union garrison holding fort sumter. The next day theu surrenedered the fort and it was evacuated.
