    On May 8, 1820 the 16th U.S congress passed a legislation. Maine became a free state and Missouri became a slave state. Slavery was also prohibited on any territory north of the 36-30 line. With the exception of Missouri.on March 6, 1820 President James Monroe signed the legislation.

    The Mexican-American War was a major conflict caused by the idea that America had a god given right to expand the Country’s borders. This was known as Manifest Destiny. Texas became a U.S. state and the tension grew. Disputes over the border interested military confrontation and President Polk wanted war to seize large parts of Mexico.

    Wilmot Proviso
    Wilmot Proviso is a law that states slavery or involuntary service will never exists. Presented by David Wilmot to the House of Representatives on August 8,1846, for lands that were won in the Mexican - American War. It was approved in the House but vetoed in the Senate. It was later brought up to be part of the Treaty of Hidalgo, and also failed.

    January 8,1848 James Marshall struck gold in Sutters Mill, California. His discovery brought in 300,000 migrants known as the forty-niners (the year they began to migrate). This brought upon thought of becoming a free state.
  • Annexation of Texas

    Annexation of Texas
    On December 29, 1845 the Republic of Texas was admitted as the 28th state into the union. Texas wanted independence from the Republic of Mexico on March 2, 1836. Both the Whigs and Democrats opposed this intro. In 1843 the U.S president John Tyler independently decided to pursue the annexation to gain popular support for his next four years in office. With meetings with the Houston administration President Tyler secured a treaty in April 1844.

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    On February 2,1848 a peace treaty was signed in the Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo between the U.S and Mexico. In the treaty it stated that the U.S had to pay Mexico 15 million to Mexico. It also U.S Rio Grande as a Texas boundary and it gave them the ownership of California, most of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Along with roughly about half of New Mexico. And Mexicans living in those areas could relocate or become a U.S citizen with full legal rights.

    California was admitted to the union as the 16th free state. In return South was guaranteed no federal restrictions on slavery for Utah and Mexico. Slave trade trade was prohibited. And Northern states have to return any run away slaves, also known as the Fugative slave law.

    Uncle Toms Cabin is a novel based on the journey that Uncle Tom an African -American slave has after being sold by Mr. and Mrs. Shelby. This is an anti-slavery novel depicting the 1850 fugitive slave act. Even thought this is an anti-slavery novel it can often be seen in a negative view because of the all the stereotypes that are put into this novel. However the author Harriet Beecher Stowe is recognized by Abraham Lincoln as the little lady that started a war.

    A Small war fought between pro-slavery and anti-slavery advocates for the control of new territory in Kansas during the years 1854-1861. K.N.A supporters wanted provisions for territorial self-government to arrest the torrent of fanaticism that had be dividing the nation.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act repelled the Missouri Compromise. It gives Kansas and Nebraska the right to decide if they were going to allow slavery in their area or not.

    On May 22,1856 Representative Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner with his cane, in retaliation for Sumners speech he criticized slave holders. The reason why he was attacking Sumner is because Sumner was talking about one of Brooks relatives.

    The Lecompton Constitution was written by pro-slavery people. It permitted slavery and excluded free blacks from living in Kansas, as well as only allowing U.S male citizens to be able to vote. This was a way of “protecting the bill of rights”.
  • John Brown Raid On Harpers Ferry

    John Brown Raid On Harpers Ferry
    In 1857 John Brown began raising money for his plan of a mass uprising of slaves. He created the secret six ( six prominent abolitionist) which came up with an invasion plan. His army grew up too 22 men including 3 of Browns sons and 5 black men. October 16,1859 his army captured some hostages and by the morning of October 17 Browns nd his men were surrounded by marines. By October 19 his army was overran and ten men were killed.
