It also divided the rest of the Louisiana Purchase into slave and free territory.

The southern slave owners felt that the the land obtained from mexico in the manifest dynasty would make the slave trading industry flourish. But the northern states felt that the southern slaves owners wanted to make the entire nation a slave empire

Also New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah would be organized without mention of slavery. In washington slavery was abolished except in one district. California would be admitted as a free state and the fugitive slave act was passed. This led to the civil war because the south wanted slave states and the north, free states.

    Fredrick douglass made a speech callsed "what is the fourth of july to the slave". Frederick douglass felt that the fourth of july to the slave is the remembrance of the of cruelty and injustice of when African americans were slaves. He feels that for the African americans it is an time to remember the inequality and the fourth of july is a mockery to blacks. This led to the civil war becuse southern states did not agree with the speech.

    In 1858 Abraham Lincoln says that residents cant ban slavery through popular sovereignty because that only gives them the right to have slavery if they want it but any body is still has the decision to own them. Stephan Douglas feels that popular sovereignty can limit slavery bacause the people have the right to abolish it if they want to. This will create an even larger division between the north and south states.

This made the northern states upset because they felt that the case was unfair and they only wanted the slaves to be free because they thought it was not right.

He was the front runner for the republican party with most of his supporters comming from the north. This led to the civil war because southerners feared that abraham would abolish slavery for good.
