California had gold so a ton of people moved there causing it wanting to it to be its own state but it could not because it would interrupt the balance of free to slave states. -
Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state
Land won from Mexico was up for popular sovereignty whether it was slave or not.
Slave auctions were banned in Washington D.C.
Texas was given $10 million but could not advocate for slavery.
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed- Tougher punishments on Northerners who helped slaves. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Slavery was left up to popular sovereignty.
People just rushed to those states to vote.

Dred Scott Case
Went with master to free state while being a slave, then went back to a slave state with his master. He sued for his freedom but lost because the supreme court did not consider him a person. Then the supreme court considered the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and got rid of it. -
John Brown
John Brown and his sons attacked an armory to supply weapons to slaves, but the slaves never arrived and his sons were killed while he was hung later for treason. -
Election of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was elected to the Souths dismay because he did not like slavery but liked Western expansion. -
Critten's Compromise (Failed Compromise)
This compromise left slavery where it was and reinstated the Missouri Compromise. -
Formation of the Union
South Carolina withdraws from Union causing Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Georgia. -
Founding of the Confedercy
The confederates states were founded as an independent republic where they banned tariffs, guaranteed slavery and made it so the presidency was one term of 6 years. -
Fort Sumter
The Confederates attacked Fort Sumter when it was just being supplied with food from the Union, this was the first battle of the Civil War. The Confederates took the fort. -
Battle of Bull Run
This was the first battle of the Civil war, it happened 25 miles from Washington. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Confederates are defeated by Grant but come back around for a surprise attack ending up on 23,000 deaths. The union wins this battle. -
Battle of Antietam
Confederate General Lee goes into the North to try to get supplies for his army but is met by General George McClellan, General Lee retreats when he sees how much death there is. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln makes the Emancipation Proclamation after the Battle of Antietam making it so slavery is outlawed in all the rebelling states. -
Battle of Vicksburg
The Union takes the Confederates last major fort on the Mississippi river. -
Battle of Gettysburg
General Lee goes into the North to get shoes but is blocked by General George Mead, three days of horrible fighting ensues. Around a total with 51,000 soldiers died. -
Lincolns Assassination
Lincoln was assassinated in Ford Theater by John Wilts Booth. -
Military Reconstruction Act
This divided the South in to five districts that were controlled by the military kept the states like that until they ratified the 14th amendment and made it so blacks could vote. -
The 14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was passed giving everyone equal protection of law and granted citizenship to all born in the United States. -
15th Amendment
This Amendment made it so black people could vote.
