He promises to keep slavery out of new states in the WEst. Within months, sven Southern states secede, or break away, from the Union. They form the Conferecy, and are later joined by four more states. -

Jefferson Davis is elecected presint of the Confederacy.
Jefferson Davis was born in a log cabin in Kentucky, the youngest and tenth child of Samuel and Jane Davis. His birthplace was less than 100 miles from that of Abraham Lincoln (also a log cabin in Kentucky) and the two were born within one year of each other. -
