  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    It starts when Rosa Parks loses her job and refuses to move from her seat for a white person. She gets arrested for her actions and soon after, the mass protest began. A pastor Martin Luther King is asked to lead, and he encouraged them, leaving a success.
  • The Little Rock 9

    A school board in Little Rock, Arkansas won a court order to allow 9 African American students in the all white High School with 2,000 students. The governor of Arkansas ordered National Guard to keep these 9 students from entering the school. Even after the President stepped in, Officials of Little Rock ordered the three public high schools closed.
  • Civil Rightds Act of 1957

    Civil Rightd Act was made to help protect the African Americans right to vote. It was passed in 1956 in hopes of more African Americans going to the Republican Party. Southern Senators did try to stop it from happening, it created a civil rights division in the Department of Justice
  • Sit-In Movement

    Four African American boys enroll in college and had an interest in the Civil Rights Movement. They decided to sit at the all white lunch counter. The students were refused service so they announced that they would sit in the same spots everyday until closing until given service. The trend started through out the US in all types of stores
  • Freedom Riders

    In response to refusals of integrated bus terminals, white and african american college studants travel south to get attention, they became known as freedom riders. Angry white mobs attac when arrived in alabama. Commisionor Connor ordered KKK to beat them.
  • James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi

    Airforce veteran applies to University of Missippi. The university avoided the desegregation education laws until James gets the court to appoint orders to enroll him. he had to have 500 escorting marshells
  • Protest in Birmingham

    King Jr. Decided to make a protest so that the whites can respond in violence so the government could intervene. King was arrested eight days after. After being released the protest grew and Bull Connor ordered for violence to stop it by force
  • The March on Washington

    2,000 people of all races went to washington to the lincoln memorial where dr. King made a speech about freedom this built upon the civil rights bill. The opposing side on congress still tried to slow the civil rights bill
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This act focused on segregation. It did not help with voting, African Americans still struggled
  • Selma March

    Selma, Alabama becomes focal point. African Americans made up most of Selma's population but only three percent voted. Sherrif Jim Clark had whites carry fire arm to intimidate the African Americans so they wouldn't register to vote
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    House of Rep. pass voting rights. Law also suspended discriminatory devices. 250,000 African American register as voters, more also got elected to be officials.
  • Assassination of MLK Jr.

    Assassinated by a sniper while standing on his hotel balacony. His death started both mourning and riot in many cities nationally. During his wake congress passed Civil Rights Act of 1968.
