The black people in Topeka, Kansas wanted their children to have the same types of schools as the white people since the black schools had terrible conditions. They took this issue to court, and they won, so the court ruled that all schools must now be integrated. This is important to the civil rights movement because it was the first step in black people gaining their freedoms.

After the supreme court made the ruling of Brown Vs. Board of Education, there was a huge outbreak in the south, and many people protested by taking their kids out of school. The governors job was to enforce this law, and was receiving pressure from the Federal Governor, while the people obviously didn't want this. Not knowing what to do, he gave the decision to the General Assembly, who created a special commission for deciding what to do called the Sibley Commission. They opposed Civil Rights.

In Shaw University of 1960, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was formed. It was a civil rights group the consisted mainly of students from colleges. They preformed sit-ins at restaurants and rode on the white seats on the bus. This is important because they were a major contributing factor to the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1966, Stokely Carmichael was elected head of the SNCC and he liked to throw around the term "black power" a lot. He also believed in the fact that violence should be used as an act of self-defense. This was important because he changed the SNCC drastically, which eventually led to its downfall.

After Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, a new leader named Ralph Abernathy was elected. This is important because Martin Luther King Jr. was a major Civil Rights Leader and this man couldn't match up to him at all, so this signified a major change in the SCLC and the Civil Rights Movement.
