    My reading history

My reading history begins at four years old and had remained active since then. There are so many books along the way that have carried me through good times and tough times.
  • Learning to read in Spanish

    Learning to read in Spanish
My first memories of letters and words date back to when I was maybe four years old. My mom labeled all the appliances and made me write the alphabet over and over for a penny for a full page. i remember watching the pile grow. That was so exciting. I was a young child driven by pennies!
  • Starting kindergarten

    Starting kindergarten
I started reading in kindergarten and then it was no longer fun to just do arts and crafts. I wanted to go to school. I was a motivated student and I loved to read.
  • Going to first grade at 5

Going to first grade at 5
Although kindergarten was fun, I was ready for a challenge. My mother spoke to the first grade teacher at our local elementary school and she allowed me to go in just to try it out and see how I responded. I started school and since I was already reading, I adjusted quickly. Reading allowed me opportunities I would have not had otherwise.
  • One of my books was my first communion catechism book

One of my books was my first communion catechism book
One of the few books I had at home was my first book of catechism. It had prayers that I had to read over and over until I memorized them. It was a very special time for me. Needless to say reading prayers shaped me into the person I am today because it began to shape my faith.
  • The rest of elementary school in Mexico

The rest of elementary school in Mexico
Reading was done at school. We engaged in many activities at school that were related to literature, but there were not many books at home so all the reading happened at school. I loved poems and short stories, tongue-twisters, and stories. All my reading up to sixth grade was done in Spanish.
  • Moving to the U.S. and learning to read in English

Moving to the U.S. and learning to read in English
There is nothing more strange than trying to make sense out of something you do not understand. Learning to read in English was hard, but worth every minute. I used to go to our public library which was tiny and right next to the city hall. I started with a second-grade reader book.
  • English, a new path to access many books.

English, a new path to access many books.
Once I learned to read English, I would spend the entire weekend at home reading. My dad used to say I would run out of sight. I started checking out many books to avoid having to go back often. The books helped me travel to all the places I wanted to see, but was too far to reach.
  • High school and literature

    High school and literature
There was silent reading and reading logs. The stories were different than anything I had ever read before and I found it all so interesting.
  • Senior year_AP English Literature

    Senior year_AP English Literature
Mr. O'Connors was excellent. We got to see the play after we read the shakespeare. The books were good, but he made the experience way better.
  • Children's literature for an adult

    Children's literature for an adult
I would go on to read so many books. i did not own the books, they mostly belonged to the library. It was not until later on in life that I would build my own library.
  • Latinamerican literature

    Latinamerican literature
I love Latin American literature. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Paulo Coehlo, Pablo Neruda, Isabel Allende, etc
  • Adulthood and imagination

    Adulthood and imagination
The joy of using the imagination and being part of the experience of losing myself in a good book is my favorite part of reading. Life is easy when you love to read. I am who I am because I love to read. Although I read mature literature, I truly find joy in children's literature.
  • Reading to children and reading for fun

Reading to children and reading for fun
Life changed and I became a mother of four. Reading to my children was a routine and we enjoyed so many books together.
  • My favorite books and authors

    My favorite books and authors
There are books that are simply great. I have read books to my children, that we own and read every so often just because it is like an old friend you need to stay in touch with in life.
  • My love of reading and literature

My love of reading and literature
It would be unfair to all the books along the way to name one or two. There are books that have been present in the most important parts of my life. The constant companion has been a book. I love reading and I love that my children enjoy reading as well. It is something we share that brings us together and helps us create memories. Because I love to read, I do not mind reading textbooks and articles for school and learning. That is a tool for the lifetime learner in me that I appreciate.
