    The Establishment of The United Nations in San Francisco
    Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to declare "United Nations." During World War 2, representatives of 26 nations pledged their government to continue fighting together against the Axis Power.
  • The Yalta Confernce

    The Yalta Confernce
    In February 4-11 , 1945, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met again. This time the conference was held in Yalta in the Crimea. With Soviet troops in most of Eastern Europe, Stalin was in a strong negotiating position. Roosevelt and Churchill tried hard to restrict post-war influence in this area but the only concession they could obtain was a promise that free elections would be held in these countries.
  • The Potsdam Conference

    The Potsdam Conference
    The Potsdam Conference, a meeting of the victorious leaders of the Allies in Europe, attempted to confront the delicate balance of power of the opposing governmental structures, democracy and communism. Held in an unbombed suburb of Berlin, it commenced July 17 lasting to August 2. Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and President Truman began the conference for their respective countries.

    The Army–McCarthy hearings were a series of hearings held by the United States Senate's Subcommittee on Investigations between April 1954 and June 1954. The hearings were held for the purpose of investigating conflicting accusations between the United States Army and Senator Joseph McCarthy.

    The launch of Sputnik
    October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball (58 cm.or 22.8 inches in diameter), weighed only 83.6 kg. or 183.9 pounds, and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path. That launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.

    In 1960, the U-2 incident occured during the cold war. The presidnet at this time was Dwight Eisenhower and the leadership of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. It was when the U.S. spy plane was shoot down by the Soviet Union.
