History of Children's Literature

Children now have access to published books that are sold by John himself.
  • Children can now go to school

This allowed children to learn how to read and write, which lead to a rise in the quantity and quality of books made. Children's literature has now become profitable and publishers create departments made especially for children's books.
  • Louise Bechtel Seaman becomes Department Head

Louise becomes department head, of the US publishing house Macmillan, in a department devoted to children's books.
  • First Two Children's Book Editors are Made

Helen Dean Fish and May Massee become the first editors of children's books, at two separate companies.
  • Children's Literature Blooms

May Massee leads others in trying to open departments of children's books. Modern picture books are now being made. Libraries are now made up of children's books and young adult literature.
  • Diversity in Children's Books Begin

Harriet Rohmer devotes her Children’s Book Press to publishing books that show, respect, and explain diversity.
