  • The Chesapeake and Potomac Hurricane

    Extensive flooding in Eastern Pennsylvania, with sections of Reading and York inundated. A total of 13.82 inches were recorded in York, PA from August 21-24. Gales whipped the eastern half of the state and 42 mPH winds were recorded in Philadelphia

  • Hurricane Hazel

    Winds gusted from 75 to 100 mph in eastern Pennsylvania as the storm tracked through. Philadelphia International Airport clocked 94 mph, Reading, 86 mph, Allentown, 82 mph and Harrisburg, 80 mph. Total rainfall of 4 to 6 inches caused extensive flash flooding in western Pennsylvania. Most of central and eastern Pennsylvania collected less than 2 inches.

    Hurricane Diane August 18-19 Flood disaster: More than a foot of rain from the combined storms fell on eastern Pennsylvania. Nearly 100 people died. Diane dumped more than 10 inches of rain in the Poconos on previously saturated ground, causing widespread, epic, flash flooding.

    June 21-23, 1972 One of Pennsylvania’s most destructive natural disasters. Extensive flooding throughout Pennsylvania, with dozens drowned. Record flooding on the Susquehanna and other rivers in eastern Pennsylvania left tens of thousands of residents homeless. Agnes was dubbed "Hurricane Agony" by the governor, who fled the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg as the Susquehanna invaded.
  • Hurricane Eloise

    September 23-26, 1975 Dumped flooding rains on the state. Not as destructive as Hurricane Agnes, but still caused a major natural disaster.
  • Hurricane Floyd

    Deluged southeastern Pennsylvania. Doylestown tallied 10.07 inches of rain and Valley Forge, outside of Philadelphia had 10.04 inches.
  • Tropical Storm Allison

    The nation’s costliest tropical storm bucketed suburban Philadelphia with up to 10 inches of rain.
  • Hurricane Isabel

    Strong gales uprooted trees and caused record power outages. Southeastern Pennsylvania had its strongest hurricane-related winds since Hazel, with gusts generally peaking 50 to 60 mph and isolated higher gusts.

    September 27-28, 2004 Hurricane Jeanne Several tropical cyclones that came ashore in Florida caused widespread, severe flooding in Pennsylvania and spawned numerous tornados. Rain associated with the remnants of hurricanes Frances (Sept 8-10), Ivan (Sept 17-19), and Jeanne (Sept 27-28), contributed to one of the state’s wettest months.
  • EF-0 tornado

    An EF-0 tornado with maximum winds of 75 mph touched down and traveled about three-tenths of a mile. No injuries were reported, but many trees were toppled and three houses near the Commodore Barry Bridge had roof and siding damage. An I-95 off-ramp under construction near the bridge was also damaged. The torrential downpour brought 11/2 to 21/2 inches of rain to the area. PECO reported that 1,800 residences in eastern Delaware County were without power during the storm.
  • Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee

    August 27-28, 2011 Combined with other weather systems, these storms produced widespread flooding in eastern Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna River crested at levels similar to Agnes in some places, and produced record flooding in some waterways. Flooding and downed trees were reported throughout the city, making many areas impassable and causing power outages. Fire Commissioner, James Johnson reported “Water came down Edgmont Avenue like a river, Chester Creek looked like rapids.”
  • Hurricane Sandy

    October 22-31, 2012 Winds, waves, and storm surge wreaked havoc along the Atlantic Coast. 7.61” of rain was recorded in Hanover, PA and wind gusts were recorded at 81 mph in Allentown PA. This storm caused 7.5 million reported power outages.
