The making of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

Website for DetailsThe reason why the Chernobyl power plant was built was to help with the Soviet Union's growing demand for electricity, also to improve their technological advancements. On August, 15, 1972 the first cubic meter of concrete was laid in the foundation of the main building. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was built in the wooded marshlands of northern Ukraine, approximately 80 miles north of Kiev.

Year the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was done being built
Website for DetailsThe In 1986 the Chernobyl accident was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The Nuclear power plant was built in the wooded highlands of Ukraine. In 1977 its first reactor went online. It had taken a matter of hours to complete in a span of 1 day or 24 hours.

Website for DetailsApril 25th 1986, 1:00pm- Anatoly Dyatlov ( a deputy chief engineer) was going to run some tests on the reactor 4, testing the effects of running the reactor at a low power. Control rods were lowered into the reactor, slowing the reaction to half- power. In preparation for the test prior to routine shutdown, reactor power was powered down to 1600 MWT for a test sequence. Now only one turbine was needed to decreased amount of steam from the reduced power and one of the turbines was switched off.

Now only one turbine was needed to make and the decreased amount of steam caused by the power to lessen and turbine #2 was switched off so that it would not function anymore and not have enough to function anymore.

Video for DetailsJust after 1 a.m. on April 26th, the reactor's power dropped suddenly, causing a potentially dangerous situation. The operators tried to make up for the low power but the reactor went out of control. If the safety systems had remained on, they would have fixed the problem; however, they did not. The reactor exploded agian at 1:23 a.m.

On April 26, 1986, the operating crew planned to test whether the Reactor No. 4 turbines could produce enough energy to keep the coolant pumps running until the emergency diesel generator was activated in case of an external power loss so it is bad for the economy with the CHernobyl Disaster.

    Video for Details
The Chernobyl staff received permission to resume the reactor power reduction. One of the operators had made a huge mistake. Instead of keeping power at 30%, he forgot to reset a controller which caused the power of plummetting to 1% because of the water which was now filling the core, and xenon (a neutron absorber) which was building up in the reactor. This amount of power was too low for the test. The water added to the reactor is heated.

The Explosion burned for Ten days

    Website for Details
The destroyed hulk burned for ten days, contaminating tens of thousands of square miles in northern Ukraine, southern Belarus, and Russia's Bryansk region. It had happened over a period of time not just 1 time during the day. It had burned many different places that had affect many different peoples life.

Soviets admit there was damage to the power plant
    Website for Details
The accident had occured, the Soviet Union never admitted to a weakness ,an error, or hazard of any sort. But the Soviet Union knew more about what was happening than the victims knew . The Soviets denied any knowledge about a nuclear disaster until 9 p.m. on April 28th, when they announced to the world that one of the reactors had been "damaged"..

25th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster
Website for DetailsThis year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Less than 2 miles away from the reactor, the evacuated town of Pripyat, once inhabited by 50,000 plant workers, is a chilling ghost town still littered with the remnants of its hasty abandonment. Within the Exclusion Zone, in dozens of abandoned villages collapsed houses are disappearing under overgrowth. Ignoring radiation levels, some 400 elderly people have returned to their homes.

    Today people still live here.
Video for Details The Chernobyl accident is far from over: workers in white suits and respirator masks show up for work every day, constructing a new concrete shield to replace a massive sarcophagus built in 1986 that contains the still-radioactive core. The sarcophagus is starting to crumble and could collapse, which could release another radioactive cloud into the air. This town is still a radioactive ghost town with very little people living here.
