-Pripyat was founded in 1970 expressly to give home to the workers of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and their families.
-This town was chosen because of its dense population and easy access to aquatic resources. -
-
After starting up the first reactor in 1977, the city of Chernobyl had 14,000 residents and in just 16 years it grew to more than 40,000 people.
-
It was supposed to be the biggest plant in the world with 12 reactors. 4 reactors were already in operation and another 2 were under construction. Before the Chernobyl accident, the nuclear power plants were seen as safer than other types of power plants, and were presented as an achievement of Soviet engineering.
-
-The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident occurred the 26 of April in 1986.
-It was the biggest nuclear energy disaster in the history of the humanity. The fourth reactor of the nuclear power plant exploded causing a lot of victims and natural damages that are still being noticed today. https://youtu.be/w8kwBAc_FrA -
1-First the steam that went to the turbines was cut off and the generators could not produce enough energy.
As a result, the refrigerant stopped reaching the reactor and the steam accumulated in the boilers, until one of them exploded, opening a hole in the roof of the reactor hall and exposing the graphite bars.
2- The graphite overheated and when it contact with the air it exploded, generating a second explosion. -
Firefighters immediately went to the area of the explosion but they didn’t know the danger that it cause and that they would die weeks later.
-
Around 600,000 people participated, this consisted in cleaning one of the areas affected by radiation for 2 or 3 minutes. Around 60,000 liquidators died and 165,000 fell ill.
-
The evacuation of Pripyat took place the day after the accident, on the afternoon of April 27, on trains, ships and buses.
-
-Most deaths and illnesses were caused by the radiation that they received through the food and by breathing.
-Most people developed cancer, leukemia, and psychological illnesses.
-Genetic damage and malformations developed in many countries. -
The experts says that the radioactivity won't disappear for 24.000 years.
-
-Pripyat is a ghost town in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in the north of Ukraine, in the Kiev region, near the Belarus border.
-Chernobyl was very affected by the II World War and became the ship repair base on the Pripyat River. -
-One of the most important areas in the Chernobyl exclusion zone is the Pripyat amusement park.
-
The town has that name due to the river that runs through the city.
-
-Today around 500 people live in Chernobyl. Many of them returned because they weren't admitted in another places.
-Some animals have mutated because of the radiation (wolfs, cows, radioactive spiders...)
