On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life. It states that the numerous traits and adaptations that differentiate species from each other also explain how species evolved over time and gradually diverged. Variations in organisms are apparent both within domesticated species and within species throughout the natural world. van Wyhe, John. “Darwin Online.” Darwin-Online.org.uk, 2019,

Darwin’s second book on evolutionary theory, The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, focusses on human evolution and sexual selection. The main argument of the book was human beings sharing a common ancestor with the great African apes. The explanation of where human beings land in the natural order, leads to the media satirizing him is an ape or monkey. van Wyhe, John. “Darwin Online.” Darwin-Online.org.uk, 2019,

Darwin publishes Insectivorous Plants sixteen years after making his first observations on these organisms. He is fascinated by their ability to digest food in a way that is similar to animals. The book is related to his theory of natural selection, with special attention on how a plant can adapt to living in austere conditions. van Wyhe, John. “Darwin Online.” Darwin-Online.org.uk, 2019,

The Formation of Vegetable Mold through the Actions of Worms is published. Darwin has exchanged letters on the subject of worms since the 1830s, gathering information from his family and from correspondents worldwide. The book explored earthworm behavior and ecology, and was considered one of the first works on soil bioturbation. This term would not be used for the work for more than a hundred years to come. van Wyhe, John. “Darwin Online.” Darwin-Online.org.uk, 2019,
