    Darwin finds the Falklans Islands to be 'desolate and wretched'. Despite his displeasure, he finds some fossils after cracking open some rocks. These fossils belong to brachiopods, which were once the most abundant organisms on Earth.

    Darwin's time here continues into February of this same year. While here, he sees Mount Osomo erupt. The eruption and the earthquaking aftermath unsettles him.
  • Galapagos Island

    Darwin's stay at the Galapagos Islands, where some of his most famous research was conducted, lasts through October. Here, he finds various species of birds, plants, and tortoises. He finds that while these species are unique to the Galapagos Islands, they hold similar bearings to other mainland species. He was fascinated and delighted with the enormous tortoises that were large enough for a human to ride. He also studied the finches of the Galapagos keenly.
