  • The Birth of Charles Robert Darwin

Charles Darwin was born on February 12th, 1809 in Shrewsbury England (National Geographic Society).

Exploring the world on the HMS Bealge
Charles Darwin was recommended to travel aboard the ship by one of his professors from Cambridge (Lotzof). This voyage enabled him to be able to see parts of the world drastically different than what he was accustomed to and where his theory on evolution had its origin (Lotzof).

    Traveling Around The World

Over the course of the years, Charles Darwin expedition aboard the HMS beagle included stops in South America, Australia, and the southern tip of Africa ("Darwin, Evolution"). During these stops, Darwin was able to study and record the local plants and animals ("Darwin, Evolution"). While he was stopped at the Galapagos Islands, the finches and tortoises stood out to him ("1859: Darwin"). These observations are what helped developed the theory evolution by natural selection ("1859: Darwin").
  • Return To England

    Return To England
In 1836 Charles Darwin returned to England (National Geographic Society). Once he returned, his work continued. Studying what he had observed over the years it lead him to question how species form and change over time (National Geographic Society). He also knew that that he would need a copious amount of evidence to support his ideas because at the time, they were radical and would challenge the commonly held beliefs of the time (Lotzof)

    Research, Experiments, and Sharing Knowledge

During these years, Charles Darwin shared his knowledge he had discovered with various communities (Lotzof). He also conducted experiments to gain more evidence (Lotzof). He had a theory that the environment that a species lives in might naturally manipulate them (Lotzof). He devised an experiment to induce artificial selection in pigeons by artificially selecting features to crossbreed to get different offspring to test this theory (Lotzof). The findings further supported his theory.
  • Learning of another Naturalist

    Learning of another Naturalist
After compiling over 20 years of research and experimenting on his theories Charles Darwin was still skeptical of publishing his work (Lotzof). Learning of another naturalist named Alfred Russel Wallace, who had similar ideas, they joined forces and presented their theory of evolution by natural selection at the Linnean Society in London (Lotzof).
  • Publication of "On the Origins of Species by Means of Natural Selection"

Publication of "On the Origins of Species by Means of Natural Selection"
Charles Darwin published his book "The Origins of Species by Means of Natural Selection" in 1859 (National Geographic Society). His book sparked an outrage from the church as it contradicted the belief of divine creation (Lotzof). However, even with accusations from the church the book quickly became a bestseller (Lotzof). His book changed a lot of peoples minds in how species change over a large amount of time (National Geographic Society).
  • The Death of Charles Robert Darwin

Charles Darwin died in 1882 at the age of 73 (National Geographic Society). He is buried in Westminster Abbey in London, England (National Geographic Society).
