    The silver from Muslim tradrers helped Charlemagne's successors. LAck of it brought them down. By 900, the Frankish empire had diminished enough for other powers to take over.

    Charlemagne was the son of Pepin the Short. As his eldest son, Charlemagne was the heir to the Frankish crown. His name means "Charles the Great." (Brondou 1)

    Escorting Pope Stephen II

    At eleven years old, Cahrlemagne was asked by his father to escort Pope Stephen II into his father's land. Charlemage was very religious, as most were at this time, so it was an honor to meet him. When he met the Pope, he was given a blessing. The Pope was going to ask that Charlemagne's father send an army to attack the Lombards, because they told Rome to submit to them or they would "slaughter every last inhabitant" (Komroff 13)

    Crowned one of the Three Kings of the Franks

    Charlemagne was eleven when he was crowned one of the three Kings of the Franks. Him, his Father, his Mother, and his brother were all anoited by the Vicar of St.Peter. The Frankish kingdom was divided into three parts: one for Pepin the Short, one for his brother, and one for him.

    First Crusade

    Declared by Pope Urban II. The Christians wanted to take control of the Holy Land, and this was the only successful Crusade. Took place after Charlemagne died, befor he bacme a saint.

    Made a Saint

    Charlemange was named a saint almost 300 years after he died. He was a saint because of all of the times he helped the Pope, as well as spread Christanity. He was named St.Charles.
  • Pepin the Short dies

    When his father died, Charlemagne became king. Because the land was divided with his brother, there were two Kings of the Franks. Both were to rule the Frankish kingdom together.
  • Brother Dies

    When Charlemagne's brother died, Charlemagne took over his land. He united both halves of the Frankish kingdom under one ruler. He now had total control, since he was no longer sharing power with his brother or his father.
  • Charlemagne's Sons are Crowned

    Charlemagne's sons are made his heirs. He was orginally going to make his eldest son, Pepin the Hunchback, his hair, but his physical disabliltiy made it so he could not be king. Pepin was furious and planned to get revenge by killing his father but was caught in his plans. Cahrlemagne could not stand to see his son killed, so he had him sent to a monastary.
  • Charlemagne Brings the Pope back to Power

    Charlemagne helped spread Christianity around Europe. He did this by returning Pope Leo III to power after a rebellion. He was later named the Emperor of the Romans.
  • Louis is Crowned

    Louis is the son that Charlemagne finally chose to be his heir. After Pepin the Short was no longer his heir, he tried to teach his sons to be a King, but spent little time with Louis, believing he would not be King. However, that changed, and Charlemagne spent as much time with him as he could before he was crowned, and Charlemagne was proud to make him the next King of the Franks.
  • Charlemagne Dies

    Charlemagne died aroung 9:00 a.m. from a lung and pleuristy infection. He first took part in the Holy Communion, the same morning he died. He was buried at the balisilica he biult in Aachen, and was buried the same day that he died.
