Great Charter forced upon King James of England by his barons in 1215; established that the power of the monarchy was not absolute and guaranteed trial by jury and due process of law to the nobility -
English Bill of Rights
document written by Parliament and agreed on by William and Mary of England in 1689, designed to prevent abuse of power by English monarchs. This forms basis for much in American government and politics today. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was the result of high tensions between the British soldiers. A crowd of people began to riot and some of the soldiers shot their guns. 5 people died in the incident. -
Boston Tea Party
Group of men dressed up as Native Americans, got on to 3 British tea ships on May 10, 1773. The dumped the tea in the Boston Harbor to protest British control on the tea trade. -
First Continental Congress
Parliament passed new laws to punish the colonists for the troubles they have caused. Delegates debated action and sent a Declaration of Rights to King George III. -
Second Continental Congress
After the King denied the first Declaration of Rights from the first meeting, the colonies met again. This became known as the Second Continental Congress. -
Declaration of Independence
The basis of our government today. This document set us free of English rule and set laws for all states. -
Shay's Rebellion
Shay's Rebellion was led by Daniel Shay. He led farmers to rebel against the regulations and taxes they felt like they were beingcrushed under.
