    United States and Britain Join Forces
    "Now that we are, as you say, 'in the same boat,'" British Prime Minister Winston Churchill wired President Roosevelt two days after the Pearl Harbor attack, "would it not be wise for us to have another conference...and the sooner the better." Roosevelt responded with an invitation for Churchill to come at one. So began a remarkable alliance between the two nations.

    Battle of the Atlantic

    The first four months of 1942, Germany sank 87 ships off the Atlantic shore. Seven months into the year, Germany destroyed a total of 681 Allied ships. The Allies responded by organizing their cargo ships into convoys. The convoys were escorted by destroyers and airplanes. This allowed them to find and destroy German's U boats faster than they could build them. By the winter of 1943, the Allies began to see many victories.

    Germany confidently approached Stalingrad with intentions of conquering. When winter came, the Soviet Union saw this as a perfect opportunity for a powerful counter attack. Germany surrendered Jan 31 of 1943.

    The North African Front

    Churchill and Roosevelt sent 107,000 Allied troops to North Africa for an invasion of Axis-controlled area. It was commanded by Dwight D. Eisenhower. The last of the Afrika Korps surrendered in May 1943.

    The Italian Campaign

    Churchill, Roosevelt, and their commanders met in Casablance to discuss strategies of where to strike next, and they agreed to only accept the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. We captured Siciliy in 1943. The Italian dictator resigned and Italy began to celebrate. BUT Hitler attacked the US on Italian soil. Thus was the battle called "Bloody Anzio".
