Cell Theory Project

  • Robert Hooke- 1653

    Robert Hooke- 1653
Hooke observed a thin portion of cork and he discovered empty spaces contained by walls and called them cells. Hooke discovered the building blocks of all life. Looked at a thin slice of cork through a microscope. His theory argued the concept of spontaneous generation.
  • Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek- (1682)

    Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek- (1682)
Leeuwenhoek was the first person to observe single-celled animals (protozoa) and also bacteria with a microscope. He refined the discoveries of Hooke by discovering that single cell organism are also living. He made this discovery through observations of fish blood cells and pond water with a microscope. His model disproved the previous model by being more in depth in the cell theory.
  • Robert Brown- (1833)

    Robert Brown- (1833)
Discovers a nucleus in a plant cells by looking at cells of Asclepiads and orchids through a microscope. His model disproved the previous model by contributing to the knowledge of cells
  • Matthias Jakob Schleiden- (1838)

    Matthias Jakob Schleiden- (1838)
Discovered that all plant tissues are composed of cells, and that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants. This statement was the first generalized statement about cells . This discovery was made by investigating plants microscopically and conceived that plants were made up of units, also known cells. This model disproves the previous models by combining previous work from former scientist.
  • Theodor Schwann- (1839)

    Theodor Schwann- (1839)
He reached the conclusion that not only plants, but animal tissue as well is composed of cells. He discovered this by pulling together and organizing previous statement on cells into one theory. The theory being that cells are organisms consist of one or more cells and that the cell is the basic unit of life and structure for all organisms. The model doesn’t disprove evidence founded before him but this knowledge only gives the clarification of the composition of animals.
  • Rudolf Virchow- (1855)

    Rudolf Virchow- (1855)
Virchow was the first to propose that diseased cells come from healthy cells. He added the third part to the cell theory which is that all cells develop only from existing cells. This discovery was made through the methods of dawing upon published information. This model basically says that cells originate from earlier cells.
