    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    The Missouri Compromise was on March 3rd, 1820 and was in Missouri. The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri to the union as a slave state and Maine as a free states. This was because Missouri wanted to become a slave state but it would unbalance the unions slave states and free states. Henry Clay helped with this compromise and was known as the "Great Compromiser".
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was on Augist 8t, 1846 in Pennsylvania. Te Wilmot Proviso was a document stating that "neither slaver nor involuntary servitude shall ever exist in any parts of the territory." This was because some northerners wanted to outlaw slavery in all parts of the Mexican Cession. This was created by David Wlmot.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was in January 29, 1850. It invloved California, Utah, and New Mexico. The Compromise of 1850 stated that California wasa free state, enacted a harsher fugitive slave law, and the Mexican Cession was divided into the territories of New Mexico and Utah. This was because southerners supported allowing slavery in the new territories, but the northerners were opposed to the spread of slavery. (Henry Clay also proposed this compromise.)

    The Fugitive Slave Act was on September 18, 1850. The Fugitive Slave Act made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. This act was to slaveholders, slaves, and people who helped slaves.

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was on May 30, 1854. The Kansas-Nebraska Act made it so Kansas and Nebraska would use popular soveirgnty to answer the question of slavery. This act pleased southerners but outraged many northerners because it repealed the Missouri Compromise. This act was made because there was a debate on letting slavery spreading to the west. Stephen Douglas was a senator frin Illinois that proposed this solution.

    Bleeding Kansas was in 1854. This event was a violence rage between proslavery settlers and antislavery settlers. This was because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    The Dred Scott v. Sandford was in February 11, 1857. This case involved Dred Scott and John Sandford. In the case, a slave named Dred Scott moved with his owner from a slave state to a free state. Then his owner died and Scott sued for his freedom. This was because there was a widespread feeling in the country that the slavery question should be settled in courts.

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were in Augost 21, 1858. This event concluded Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of formal political debates where Lincoln ran for the U.S. senate in Illinois against Douglas in 1858. The two men debated seven times at varios locations around the state. Lincoln lost the election but gained national recognition.
