    In 1819 Missouri wanted to join the Union as a slave state, to maintain a balance Maine was admitted as a free state. Also a line was created dividing the Louisiana territory. The Missouri Compromise was passed March 3rd, 1820. The compromise only stalled the south from wanting to secede.

    Wilmot Proviso
    It was an attempt to eliminate slavery in the land gained from the Mexican-American war.
    It did not pass in the South-Dominated senate but angered southerners because it was an attack on slavery, which helped grow the rift between north and south.
    It was suggested by David Wilmot, a Congressman of Pennsylvania.

    The Kansas Nebraska act was the act that allowed Nebraska and Kansas to decide if they want to be a slave or free state. The act basically repealed the Missouri compromise of 1820 which got rid of the line between slave and free states in the Louisiana Territory. The act was passed on May 30, 1854.

Court case ended in March 6, 1857 He took his owner to court and said since he lived there he was a free man The court however ruled that since he was black, he had no rights and was not a citizen This meant that in all territories(not states) slavery was legal Southerners were happy, and northerners were outraged

It was mainly about slavery and what to do about it, which Lincoln was against it and Douglas was in the middle. It made Lincoln a well known name even though he lost, and helped the division of the democratic party

    On October 16-18 John Brown was a major abolitionist, who attacked Harper's Ferry Virginia in hope that slaves will rebel against t heir owners to start an army with John Brown. He was tried and sentenced to death on December 2, 1859. John Brown influenced people to stop slavery at any means.
