This led to the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which made the Rio Grande River the official border between the US and Mexico as well as the US getting control of California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, and parts of Arizona, Colorado , and Wyoming. The US had to pay 15 mil for this though.

This was a weird election because Lincoln was not on the ballot of 10 southern states. this led to an uprise of hate from the south because they didn't even know he was an option to pick. They didn't want Lincoln as president becuase he was against slavery expanding.

    This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops (northern troops) stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina were attacked by the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event.
