  • Missouri Compromise

    In 1819 11 states were slave free while 11 still had slavery. This was until Missouri decided to join the pro slavery side, which would make the states unbalanced, which the anti-slave countries were not happy about. This resulted in a compromise, after a lot of debating, Missouri would be cut in half to add in Maine so that slave and no slave countries were equal again.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    The person who basically started Wilmot Proviso was a Democrat from Pennsylvania, David Wilmot. He suggested that any territory gained from Mexico should be slave free. However even though it may seem so he was not a abolitionist. He basically just didn't want to be forced to have a southern policy which Polk was trying to make.
  • Compromise of 1850

    In 1850 Clay, a southern senator, came up with the compromise. The compromise consisted of california needing to be a free state, Utah and New Mexico will be organised without mention or have restrictions on slavery, slave trading should end in Washington DC, a revised Fugitive Slave Act should be sent to the south, and Texas should give land back to New Mexico and in return Congress would assume 10mil that Texas owed. After a while this compromise passed.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act was basically mandating that fugitive slaves had to be sent back to their owners even if the slaves were in a free state. It allowed federal marshals to form groups(posses) to go to the north to get the slaves back. Those who didn't cooperate would get a fine and even risk jail time. The Fugitive Slave Act also went with the Compromise od 1850.
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a instalment in a newspaper, this instalment was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a story about Uncle Tom a middle aged slave and the trials he has to go through. The instalment was later reprinted in as a book it sold 300,00 copies in the US in the first year. This book was a major part in the freeing of slaves.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The person to introduce the Kansas Nebraska Act was Senator Douglas. This bill was supposed to appeal to the south and annul the Missouri compromise. It divided the Nebraska territory in 2 (Kansas and Nebraska). Nebraska was less likely to have slaves due its climate and therefore inability to have successful agriculture however Kansas may have been able to. This Act also helped people who believed in the slave power conspiracy feel they were correct.
  • Scott v. Sanford

    Scott v Sanford or the Dred Scott Decision was a famous court case. In this case Scott tried to sue in federal court. This case ended with the Supreme Court ruling that African Americans do not count as US citizens and therefore can not sue in federal court.
  • John Brown’s Raid

    He first arrived in Harper's Ferry on July 3, 1859, with his sons and weapons. On October 16 Brown and 18 men went to Harper's Ferry. They surround the area and raided a armory. They then took hostages of Lewis Washington and John Allstadt and their slaves were freed.
  • Election of 1860

    The election was between Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckenridge, and John Bell. In the end Abraham Lincoln won.
  • 13th-15th Amendments Passed

    The 13th-15th amendments where basically the amendments that gave black men basic rights. The 13th amendment abolished slavery. The 14th gave them citizenship(and anyone born in the us). The 15th gave them the right to vote.
