While North America was expanding France and Britain began disagreeing over land leading to the French and Indian War. By the end of this war Britain had defeated France and pushed them out of North America.

In an attempt to stop smuggling the Sugar Act of 1764 was passed which decreased the tax on sugar and molasses by half and increased the enforcement of the tax. This made colonist uncomfortable and feel like they were no longer governing themselves.

A war broke out between Lexington and Concord, they were two country towns west of Boston. Thomas Gage had sent troops to Lexington to arrest Adams and Hancock which was only provoked the battles to begin.
