Creation of Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney designed a machine from interchangeable parts that made it quicker and wiser to produce cotton. And it spread quickly across the south. It made cotton much more profitable and increased the damand for slaves. Thus more and more slaves were brought to the United States. -
Louisiana Purchase
As president, Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France.
This promoted westward expansion and the expansion of slavery. This Led to tensions between people settling in the area. -

Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book titled Uncle Tom's Cabin
As a white person many white people felt less intimidated by reading her book then attending a speech by a black person. Because it was a book it could be absorbed anywhere and people were there with the character feeling what he felt and it inspired many more abolitionists. -
Frederick Douglass gives July 4th Speech
After escaping slavery Frederick Douglas wrote and performed a famous speech about the Fourth of July.
Fredrick Douglas showed everyone that blacks people are every bit as smart and equal. His speech also fired up many abolitionists and encouraged other speakers. -

“Bleeding Kansas”
When Kansas was eligible for statehood it was going to use popular sovereignty to determine whether or not it becomes a slave state. This led to many people flooding Kansas to cast their illegal vote. Then it was determined Kansas would be a slave state. Riots broke out with many killed. Notably John brown and his sons murdered pro slavery settlers. And on the other hand, the mayors house and other anti-slavery places were burnt or vandalized. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
A new bill by Stephen Douglas was made that granted the right for all new territory’s to have popular severity mean they could vote on we the for not to allow slavery.
This eventually led to bleeding Kansas. And the imbalance of power in congres forced congress men to talk about slavery. -

After Abe Lincoln was elected president, an enraged south decided to secede from the union. This caused great tensions because now there were two sides of America with very different values and some people may be living on both sides. Not to mention the economic reliance they both had on each other previously. -
Attack on Charles Sumner
While giving a speech against slavery Charles Sumner was nearly fatally beaten by his peer Preston brooks. This showed that violence was impending, and the lawmakers of the country couldn’t even remain United. More canes were supplied to Brooks, and it was evident this would become a topic for war. -
Dred Scott v Sanford
Dred Scott was an enslaved man who had lived In Illinois, a free state for a while and he argued he should have been free.
The Supreme Court ruled against him arguing he couldn't be a citizen because he was African American. The case also ruled that living in a free state doesn't always make you free because property is protected. He wasn’t able to file a lawsuit in the first place. This angered the north as they wanted everyone to be free and this was encroaching on their States. -

Raid on Harpers Ferry
A man by the name of john. Brown got together with others and planned to go plantation to plantation killing enslaves and free people. This did not work, and he was hung. In his last written word, he predicted there would be a war over slavery. It shows how the tensions had developed so much there was now violence. -
Election of 1860
Abe Lincoln was elected president. This enraged the south and they seceded because Lincoln hadn’t even been on many southern ballots. He also had a strong view that slavery shouldn’t continue to spread. -

Shots fired at Ft. Sumter
This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops (northern troops) stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina was attacked by the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event.
