After the invasion by D.Afonso Henriques and the passage from the Islamic world to the Christian world, in 1300 the residents of the castle started being kings along with bishops, nobles of the court ,and military fortification.

The castle returned to its military importance, by adapting and building some buildings to house the Spanish garrison and to serve the castle as a prison. This change happened during 1700s and 1800s.

After the earthquake this castle was rebuilt by by Custódio Vieira da Silva, Fillipo Terzi, João Gillot, Manuel do Couto, Teodósio de Fria.
