    Treaty of Kanagwa
    Millard Fillmore letter which politely asked the Shogun to allow free trade between the United States and Japan. Japan's reply was this Treaty.
  • Meiji Reform

    Meiji Reform
    The Shogun steps down because the Japanese citizens were angry with him for giving into foriegn demands. They return the Emperor to power and the Emperor remains in power for 45 years. This is known as the Meiji Era.

    In 1885 Japan and China both agree to not send armies into Korea, however in 1894 China breaks this agreement. Japan declares war on China, and drives them out of Korea.

    The Japanese offer to reconize Russia's rights to Manchuria if they stay out of Korea. The Russians refused so the Japanese launched a surprize attack which drives the Russians out of Korea.

    After the Russo Japanese War, Japan attacks Korea with vengance and imposes annexation on Korea. They replace Korean newspapers, schools, language and culture with Japanese studies.
