Bridgid's Literacy Timeline

  • Started talking

    Started talking
I was an early talker according to my mother. I was about 8 months old when I started saying my first words and almost 2 when my speech really developed, everyone in my family says you could have full conversations with me then.
  • Pre School

    Pre School
When I was 4 I started going to a preschool in Ellicott City. While I was there my love for books started. At that time I could only read 2-3 word sentences and of course loved picture books.
  • Kindergarten

    Kindergarten
I started Elementary school at age 5 at a local Elementary school in Ellicott City. While in Kindergarten, I remember specifically starting to read fully in Kindergarten. I also had an extremely sweet kindergarten teacher who made learning and reading very enjoyable!
  • 4th Grade

    4th Grade
4th grade stands out to me in terms of reading quite vividly. I had another great teacher who made reading very enjoyable. I also remember starting to read long chapter books in 4th grade.
  • 5th Grade

    5th Grade
In 5th grade we did the most exciting project. We got to write and illustrate our own poetry books. We got a couple weeks to work on them to really put thought and love into them. We wrote poetry about our lives and things we loved. I still have the book to this day!
  • 6th Grade

    6th Grade
Middle school, especially 6th grade really stands out to me. I used to always beg my grandfather to take me to the library once a week and I would literally check out 15-20 books at a time.
  • 8th Grade

    8th Grade
Once I got a little older in middle school, I remember being more interested in my social life and hanging out with my friends instead of staying home with my nose in a book like I did in previous years. I was more interested in reading teen magazines.
  • 9th Grade English

    9th Grade English
I had the best English teacher in 9th grade, I remember being so scared to start high school and be a Freshman. But my English teacher made the class so special and relatable so you enjoyed engaging and participating. We also read books that kept my attention and that I could relate to as a teenager.
  • Became a Mother

    Became a Mother
The best day of my life was becoming a mother. My son is almost 10 now, but ever since he was a small baby I have incorporated speech, language and writing. He was also an early talker ( hasn't stopped talking since!) but I like to credit my early reading and large library of children's books to that.
  • Infant Care Teacher

    Infant Care Teacher
I started working as an Infant Care Teacher at a local daycare center. This was my first real, full time job. I have known since I was young that I wanted to be a teacher so this was a good starting point for me. I also enjoyed reading to the children, showing them picture books and letting them explore with different writing materials/art materials.
