Bombings on the Liverpool Area

    This marked the date of the first set of bombs dropped on the Merseyside area in Birkenhead. Also marked the first casualty of Liverpool’s 'Blitz'.

    Liverpool Cathedral damaged
    A oncoming bomb blast damaged a large part of Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral whilst it was in construction, delaying its progress.
  • Heavy raid on the Docks

    Heavy raid on Liverpools famous docks area also damaging many warehouses. The Argyle Theatre in Birkenhead was also seriously damaged at this time.

    Heaviest air raids so far in Liverpool with 200 people killed in total as the first land mines were dropped. 164 people were killed when a shelter underneath the Junior Technical School situated on Durning Road, collapsed.
  • 300th Raid

  • Start of the Christmas Raids

    Lasting 3 grim nights between the 20th and the 22nd was the infamous ‘Christmas Raids’, which saw 365 people killed. A further 1399 children were evacuated out of Liverpool between these dates.
  • Winston Churchill visits Liverpool

    Winston Churchill visits Liverpool to see the city and port, as well as to try and boost the areas moral. Luftwaffe attacks this month were limited to just three his month, Conserving energy and resources for perhaps the worst period of bombing outside London during the war - the upcoming ‘May Blitz’.

    Worst single period of bombing on Merseyside during the Second World War. 1453 People killed in Liverpool alone in the following week.

    Despite only having lasted 7 days it marked a period of mass slaughter and destruction, with 51,000 people made homeless in Liverpool alone, with a further 25,000 made homeless in the nearby area of Bootle.
