Block 1: HIV/AIDS Timeline

By JNagy
  • HIV was medically discovered

On this day Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report marks the first official reporting of what will later become known as the AIDS epidemic.
  • AIDS gets its formal name

CDC uses the term “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome” for the first time and releases the first case definition of AIDS: “a disease at least moderately predictive of a defect in cell-mediated immunity, occurring in a person with no known cause for diminished resistance to that disease.”
  • Pre-Exposure preventative medication is approved

The Food and Drug Administration approves the first long-acting injectable form of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Apretude (cabotegravir extended-release injectable suspension), for use in adults and adolescents.
