    Death of Lt. Richard Collins III
    A black student from a neighboring school was murdered in a hate crime by a white UMD student. UMD promised a memorial for Lt. Richard Collins III, but to this day have not fulfilled this promise over 4 years later, causing anger and frustration in the community. This student had previously faced a hate crime charged that people felt was not properly addressed, and the proper memorialization of Lt. Richard Collins III is the first point in Black Terps Matter's demands.

    Justice for Jordan Rally
    A Black UMD student Jordan McNair died of heatstroke after collapsing during a football workout. An investigation into the football program that found a toxic culture in addition to the fact that there was a black student that died under the watch of university faculty led to outcry from the student body demanding for justice. BLM signs can be seen in the crowd as well as signs with the name of the recently murdered Lt. Richard Collins III, showing the growing frustration.

    Black Terps Matter Founded
    Black Terps Matter was founded at the University of Maryland by three Senior Undergraduates who want to make change at UMD to make Black students more safe and make opportunities more fair for black students and faculty. They focus on black pride and protests at the University of Maryland.
  • Black Terps Matter First Protest

    Black Terps Matter First Protest
    BTM held their first protest, a march, after they finalized their first set of demands. They marched across campus to the Administration building chanting things like #BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, #SayHisName, and Hands Up, Don’t Shoot, as well as holding speeches at the Nyumburu Amphitheater.
  • Darryll Pines becomes UMD President

    Darryll Pines becomes UMD President
    Darryll Pines became the new UMD president, and immediately implemented new reforms for local police. Some of these reforms include divesting from giving military surplus to police, and creating a task force to examine things such as racial profiling, excessive force, and banning the use of choke holds and pepper spray at peaceful gatherings.
  • Pines appoints Students to a “Black student demand working group”

    Pines appoints Students to a “Black student demand working group”
    President Pines appointed two of the three BTM organizers to a "Black student demand working group". The goal of this group was to work with the various black student groups on campus and create a list of demands similar to the community generated list of demands from BTM and present it to the administration. This comes a month after BTM presented their demands to the administration at a protest outside the administration building.
  • UMD Graduates Send Demands

    UMD Graduates Send Demands
    UMD BLK Grads for BLK Lives, a group of UMD black graduate students sent their own list of demands to the administration signed by over 200 people. These demands expand upon those made by the group of 5 students including 2 founders of BTM that compiled 25 demands that the school published on their website. The administration has been having meetings with them to discuss these demands.
