  • Martin Luther King Jr. Gets Arrested

    On April 12,1963 Martin and Abernathy were arrested in Burlingham, Alabama.
  • Gathering at the Sixth Street Baptist Church

    On May 2, more than a thousuand Afriacan American students skipped class and gathered at the Sixth Street Baptist Church to march to downtown Biringham. This is when it all begun.

    The following day the children went on another march. Martin Luther King Jr, told the parents to not worry about their chikldren that they were going to be alright. This time comissioner, Bull Connor, directed the local police and fire departments to use force to halt the demonstration,and this went bad. They were all hosed down, biten by dogs, and most of them were arrested.

    On May 7, 1963 when Avery arrived at Burlingham there were more than 3,000 black young people were marching on the city.
  • The Burlingham Campiagn Comes to an End

    Because of the intervention from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Burlingham campaign ended when the SCLC (Southern Leadership Conference) and local officails reached an agreement in which the city promised to desegregate downtown stores and release all protesters from jail if- the SCLC eneded all boycotts and demonstrations.
  • The Announcement of the Birlingham Board of Education.

    A week and a half after the Birningham Board of Education announced that all the students that participated in the demonstrations would be suspended or expelled so the SCLC and the NAACP (National Association for the Avancement of the Colored People) took this issue to the federal district court, where the judge upheld the ruling.
  • Birlingham Board of Education' Plan Backfires

    In the same day as the initial ruling, the Fifth Circiut Court of Appeals reveresed the decision and comended the Birlingham borad of education.
