van Frassen's book, The Scientific Image, was published in 1980. This was the first major work on the topic of Constructive Empiricism, a philosophy that states that scientific theories only aim to describe what is observable, and make no claims about what is unobservable. Therefore, a theory is true if everything it claims is observably real.
