Hauntings of IllinoisAccording to the Kirkbride plan, the original State Hospital was basically completed but due to many factors such as being located on an old mine shaft and looking like a medieval castle, it was rethought.

Peoria State HospitalThe hospital was rebuilt with a "Cottage Plan" layout including about 35 buildings and its own water tower.

Oak Grove School district formed by the way of land grants from citizens. the original building burned down in 1922 and was reconstructed to fit the growing population due the the state hospital's opening in 1900.

Dr. Zeller approves the construction of a zoo on the grounds for the patients using the metal from the previously removed bars and doors. The zoo included 13 deer, 2 black bears, wolves, foxes, coyotes and many other animals.

The name changes once again to the Peoria State Hospital. Also at this time a Pallegra outbreak takes place, infecting 500 patients over the next three years and killing about 150.

Dr. Zeller leaves the Peoria State Hospital to be an alienist. In 1917 he actually becomes the superintendent at Alton State Hospital

American Milling Company builds an eleven-story feed mill in Bartonsville,Il. Described as the biggest mill in the world at the time.

Dr. Zeller returns to the Peoria State Hospital to find that his patients have suffered from major neglect. He takes an interesting approach and checks himself into the hospital for 3 days spending each day in a different ward. Having such a profound experience, Dr. Zelller ordered all of the workers to spend an 8 hr shift as a patient.
