Backyard Gardening

  • Getting Started!

At the beginning of March start working with your soil.
Squeeze a handful of soil into a ball in your palm. If the lump falls apart easily when you tap it then it is ready to plant, but if it holds together then it needs more time to dry out. Once the soil is ready, you can begin to add organic matter to the soil:

  • Harvest Squash

After about 40-55 days (May 5-June 9), the rind can be penetrated with a thumbnail. Squash can be stored in a refrigerator for up to ten days. Wash it, cut off the ends and slice or cube the squash. Blanch for three minutes, then immediately immerse in cold water and drain. Pack in freezer containers and freeze.
  • Harvest Tomatoes

After about 70-90 days (May 29-June 18), look for a pink color about the size of a dime on the blossom end. At room temperature, allow the tomatoes to ripen for about three days. Never refrigerate fresh tomatoes. To freeze, core fresh unblemished tomatoes and place them whole in freezer bags or containers.
  • Harvest Cucumbers

After about 50-65 days (June 4-19), the cucumbers should have dark green skin and soft seeds. Cucumbers need to be stored and wrapped tightly in plastic wrap to retain moisture. They will keep for a week to 10 days when stored properly in the refrigerator.
  • Harvest Snap Beans

After about 65-75 days (June 19-29), the bean cavity should be full and the seed should be ¼ grown. Store beans in a moisture proof air-tight container in a refrigerator. They can be frozen, canned, or pickled.
  • Harvest Sweet Corn

After about 65-90 days (June 26-July 21), the grain should be plump and it should be golden in color. Corn freezes well. Prepare for eating or preserving immediately after picking.
