First Degree Program in Behavior Analysis: Columbia University
    History of teachers college
The opening of the teachers college at Columbia marked one of the few options available for an education in behavior analysis at that time on the East Coast. Florida and Western Michigan had degree programs, but there were not many options on the other side of the US.
  • Fuller

Operant Conditioning of a Vegetative Human Organism Fuller's paper marked the first published useage of operant procedures, derived in laboratory settings with animals, to a human organism with disabilities. An 18 year old man with severe phsyical/intellectual disabilitie who had been hospitalized his entire life and was reported to have never learned anything, was taught to raise his arm to a horizontal position. A reversal design showed control.
  • Boulder Conference: Science-Practitioner Models

an interesting philisophical paper on the modelThe science-practitioner model or the "Boulder Model" is a training model for graduate programs that focuses on creating a foundation based on research and scientific practice. Orginigally designed to train clinical psychologists and members of APA, it has branched out and been adapted for other specialties. According to the model, we as psychologists should be a scientist and competent researcher as well as a practitioner who applies techniques to solve the problems of our clients.
  • JEAB Founded

Frustrated with the lack of interest in publishing studies that stressed the behavior change of individual organisms by the current journals (Journal of Experimental Psychology), a group of operant researchers set out to start a new journal. Charles B. Ferster would become the founding editor. You can read more about this here:

    Fenske (1985)
This article looked at comparisons between children with Autism under and beyond the age of 60 months in an intensive treatment program and determined that the EARLY part of intervention is key to maximizing positive outcomes.
  • Lovaas

This is the ground breaking study that showed that early intensive ABA treatment proved much more effective than less substantial treatment packages. Almost half of the participants in the intervention group lost their diagnosies of autism.

    "Let Me Hear Your Voice"
A mother of two children diagnosed with autism writes about her family's experience from finding out about the diagnosis and the bleak prognosis that it entails, all the way through both of her kids "losing" the diagnosis. This was a huge turning point in this timeline because parents now had hope and became advocates for their own children. This book started a wave of parent advocacy in which the families really drove the course of the treatment rather than the therapists.
