In 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson, successfully crossed the Blue Mountains. At first, the European settlers were too busy to even think about crossing the Blue Mountains. But by the time Governor Macquarie arrived in 1810, with a combination of drought, insect plagues and exhaustion of the soil around Sydney made finding fresh land imperative.
