    English came to India around 1600. English was first used for trading between Britain and India. Since the rulers in Calcutta spoke english the locals thought if they learned it a whole new world of opportunities would open up to them, That they could experience the english culture.
    While english ruled the people it also gave them cultural freedom.
    English has created 2 new languages in India - Binglish and Hinglish
  • The Caribbean

    English came to Caribbean with settlers in the 1620’s. A simplified version of english called creole came to be as a way of communication between sailors and slaves.
    Creole ‘borrowed’ some words from the indigenous population.
    Many words from creole are now used in modern english such as tobacco and hammock
  • Australia

    English came to Australia 1788 with the ‘First Fleet’.
    The ‘First Fleet’ consisted of 11 ships carrying around 780 english criminals, many of which who were being ‘transported for life’ and not allowed to return to England.
    There were 4 men to every woman, which caused problems in the settlement along with the fact that many of the settlers were unfamiliar with the land,animals and plants which led to food trouble and starvation.
