On this day, four Somali pirates attack the Maersk Alabama (American cargo ship). The crew and the Captain (Captain Phillips) had been warned that there were pirates off the coast of Somalia but the Captain ignored those warnings according to www.vulture.com

The Somali Pirates board the ship. The majority of the crew flees to the engine room while three people were held at gunpoint ( Captain Phillips and two crew members). After much conflict, Captain Phillips is taken hostage by the pirates.

The Destroyer USS Bainbridge and the USS Halyburton (FFG-40) are sent to the Gulf of Aden in response to this issue.

on this day, Captain Phillips tries to escape from the lifeboat, but he was recaptured after the pirates gun shots ( Captain Phillips was not injured)

The US Navy Seal marksmen open fired and killed three pirates. Captain Phillips was resucued uninjured (although he did have scars around his wrists from beong held by a tight rope)
