My journey to literacy has been filled with positive and negative factors. Different points along my journey fluctuated drastically from loving to read to hating to read and back to loving it again. It was if I was on a litaracy rollercoaster ride. At four years old I recieved a good start on reading while I attended head start and pre-k. I loved looking book and hearing my teacher read to me.

When I was 5 and 6 years old I can remember playing word game and mimicking my older sister. This was extremebly enjoyable for me. My sister was four years older than me and I idolized everything she did. I could not wait to read just like her.

Fun and exciting soon turned into dread and worry. I thought my older sister was amazing. I knew I wanted to be just like her. The downfall came when she was held back a grade for not being able to read well enough. In my eyes she read very well and I began to worry that I would not be able to read well enough to pass either.

The worry of me not being able to read lasted all of my elementary years but matters became worse. I was forced to read aloud to my class and that was something that terrified me. I had to either stand in from of the class or read standing at my seat. I would often stumble on words because I was so nervous. I look back now and I wish I wasnt so afraid and worried about what others would think about me.

    Junior High
I continued to dislike reading until I was in junior high. This was the time when I was able to read books that realy interested me. My parentes did foster care and my mom would often read books to help her with training. The first book I completely read just for fun that I can remember not wanting to put it down ever was called, "A Child Called It". It was about a child's courage to survive. This grew my love for inspirational stories.

Some of the foster children at home were in special ed and just moving through the system. I recognized that they were not being taught the fundamental things they would one day need to live on their own. Reading and counting money is what I began working with them trying to help them understand. I helped several of the already teenaged foster children who could not read before begin to read. It was an amazing feel and I think that is one reason I became a teacher.

Afer a few years of delightful reading, it went downhill once more. At this time, extracurricular activities became my primary focus. This took up so much of my time that I only read the materials that was given in a class. This was usually something that did not interest me (fiction) and I was too distracted to fully comprehend. I became frustrated with the material and would have to reread sentences over and over to understand what it was saying.

At this point in my life I have had kids and found a new love for books. I can't read enough to my children and find children's literature to be more enjoyable now then when I was little. I hope my children will love reading and not struggle as I once did. One book that I was read when I was younger and I read to my boys all the time is, "Love You Forever".
  • Pleasure Reading

    Pleasure Reading
I began reading for pleasure again when I was going through a time of anxiety. For possibly the first time in my life I felt like I could escape into the book and everything I had been worrying about was gone. The book that really helped me was called, "Heaven Is For Real".

Now that I am older I love reading just about any non-fiction, informational text. I am the type of person that does not like fiction or scifi books or movies. I never have and probably never will. I love reading books that can teach me about teaching and help improve me in some way.
