  • Founding of the ANC

    The ANC is a national liberation movement. Originally known as South African Native National Congress. It was formed in Bloemfontein, South Africa. It was formed to unite the African people and spearhead the struggle for fundamental political., economic, and social change.

  • Congress Youth League founded

    The youth wing of the ANC. It was formed by memebers of the ANC who believed in African Nationalism and wanted to follow an active policy focused on the mobilisation of the masses.

  • Defiance Campaign

    Organized by the ANC, this was the first large-scale, multi-racial political mobilization against apartheid laws under a common leadership.

  • Albert Luthuli wins the Nobel Peace Prize

    First South African to receive the Nobel Prize for Peace.

  • Spear of the Nation formed in South Africa

    The military wing formed by Nelson Mandela

  • Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life in prison

    Was sentenced to life in prison after a trial. He was charged with sabotage, illeagaly leaving the country, and treason. He served 27 years befor being released.

  • The Soweto Uprising

    Thousands of students from the African township of Soweto, outside Johannesburg, gathered at their schools to participate in a student-organized protest demonstration.

  • Steve Biko dies in police custody

    Biko was found naked and shackled outside a hospital in Pretoria, 740 miles away, on September 11 and died the next day of a massive brain hemorrhage. Police initially denied any maltreatment of Biko; it was determined later that he had probably been severely beaten while in custody, but the officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing.

  • DesmondTutu wins the Nobel Peace prize

    He emphasized nonviolent means of protest and encouraged the application of economic pressure by countries dealing with South Africa. 1.Equal civil rights for all

  • Nelson Mandela released from prison

    Released from prison after 27 years. He was imprisoned for treason, illegaly leaving the country, and sabotage.

  • Nelson Mandela becomes President of South Africa

    Became South Africa's first black president after more than three centuries of white rule. He was president until June of 1999.
